Neurological injuries involve damage to the nervous system. Your body's nervous system is the "control center" for your entire body. It includes your brain, your spinal cord, and the entire network of nerves that thread throughout your body. Your brain uses information it receives from your nerves to coordinate all of your actions and reactions, like tasting, smelling, seeing, hearing, thinking, dreaming, breathing, heart beating, moving, running, sleeping, laughing, singing, remembering, and feeling pain or pleasure. All of these things are controlled through your central nervous system. When you experience a trauma of any degree to your brain, it can disrupt the functioning of the central nervous system and cause some of these everyday activities to become a challenge.

HERE ARE A FEW CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH DAMAGE TO THE BODY'S NERVOUS SYSTEM:

  • Brain injury that results from trauma or conditions such as stroke or tumors
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
  • Polyneuropathies such a Guillian-Barre syndrome or chronic inflammatory polyneuropathy
  • Vestibular disorders such as BPPV, acoustic neuroma, or other conditions that cause dizziness and loss of balance
  • Spina bifida
  • Cerebral palsy
  • EDS
  • Dystautonomia

Spero Rehab therapists use a neurodevelopmental treatment approach to help re-map those pathways and get your nervous system communicating again. Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT) is an advanced therapeutic approach developed by Dr. Berta Bobath and practiced by experienced Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, and Speech/Language Pathologists. Dr. Bobath described NDT as "a holistic approach dealing with the quality of patterns of coordination and not only with the problems of individual muscle function. It involves the whole person, not only his sensory-motor problems but also problems of development, perceptual-cognitive impairment, emotional, social and functional problems of the daily life as well." http://www.bioline.org.br/pdf?me05016.

At Spero Rehab, we use this hands-on approach in working with people who have central nervous system injuries that have created difficulties in controlling movement. Our NDT-trained therapists work collaboratively with you, your family, your caregivers and your physicians to develop comprehensive treatment programs based on the principles of human neurology and physiology. If you are experiencing minimal to severe motor difficulties as a result of a brain injury, you can benefit from the NDT approach.

NEUROLOGICAL REHABILITATION

Spero Rehab's nationally recognized therapists are specially trained in the latest neurologically advanced treatment approaches. We focus on the theory of neuroplasticity for the recovery of a brain injury. Neuroplasticity is a theory that the brain can actually reorganize itself after an injury to compensate for damage to a specific area. After a person suffers a brain injury, the area of the brain that was harmed no longer functions properly. By utilizing the theory of neuroplasticity and treatment approaches focused on forced use and cortical re-mapping (NDT or neuro-developmental treatment) we are able to facilitate the reorganization of the structure of the brain to form new pathways and promote normal movement once again.
